Community Art Initiatives – Belleville

The historic architecture and ethnic traditions of Belleville inspired the design of this Welcome Mat. The decorative border of the quilt was borrowed from the wooden scrollwork which appears above lintels of the German Folk houses in the area. Color again plays a symbolic role, with black signifying the rich soil basin, and yellow representing mineral wealth and ripening grain. The vivid imagery reflects the importance of education, transportation and industry in the community. Designed by Carolyn Karasek.
