This page provides a brief summary of a proposed transit service restoration plan that would be implemented in late summer 2009. In response to a transit operations funding deficit, it was necessary for Metro to reduce MetroBus, MetroLink, and Metro Call-A-Ride service by more than 30% on March 30, 2009. Since then, many residents of the St. Louis region have been unable to reach critical destinations aboard transit including employment, health care, shopping, and recreation.
This Metro service enhancement is possible because during their last session, the Missouri State Legislature passed a bill containing a one-time $12 million appropriation to the St. Louis region to support transit service. They took this action because leadership from the State of Missouri recognized the importance of transit to a robust regional and state economy. If this appropriation is approved by Missouri Governor Jay Nixon, these funds would restore approximately one-third of the transit service that was eliminated or reduced on March 30.
The service change proposals outlined here are designed to restore the most needed transit service throughout the St. Louis region. This service could be restored as early as August 2009 and would last for a period of one year. To ensure that transit service does not face future cutbacks, and instead grows to meet the growing needs of the community, it is critical that the St. Louis region identify and establish a permanent and growing source of funding sufficient to support its transit needs.
