Avoid Interstate 64 Bridge Construction Work for Next Year and a Half By Taking Metro

Return to Blog

With highway construction work ramping up in St. Louis, now is the perfect time to adjust your work commute to include Metro. If your travels take you on Interstate 64, then you’ve probably seen the highway signs advising that this weekend (February 1-4), the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) plans to shut down Interstate 64 in both directions from Hampton Avenue to Forest Park Avenue. The interstate will be closed so crews can tear down the Taylor Bridge and the Newstead Bridge. It is part of the new interchange work at Tower Grove and Boyle and that’s not all– MoDOT will also be replacing four bridges over the highway.

I-64 will reopen early Monday morning, but for the next year and a half, motorists will face lane shifts and lane closures plus narrower lanes on I-64 from Hampton Avenue to Forest Park Parkway to

accommodate the bridge projects and new interchange construction. For more information on the MoDOT construction, click here.

You can avoid the bridge demolition, construction delays and traffic jams on I-64 by taking MetroLink or MetroBus or a combination of both.  Take advantage of Metro’s free Park-Ride lots and save money on gas and on daily parking costs! To figure out your commute, you can go online and use our Trip Planner feature or call Metro Transit Information at 314-231-2345 and we will help you plan your trip back and forth to work or to sporting events, concerts or other destinations.

Taylor and Newstead are closed at I-64 and that is impacting two MetroBus routes–#14 Botanical Garden and the #80 Park Shaw. They are being rerouted through November 2013 because of the bridge projects.

#14 Botanical Garden SOUTHBOUND, #80 Park Shaw EASTBOUND
Regular route to Taylor and Clayton, left on Clayton, right on Tower Grove to regular route.

#14 Botanical Garden NORTHBOUND, #80 Park Shaw WESTBOUND
Regular route to Tower Grove and Chouteau, continue north on Tower Grove to Clayton Ave, left on Clayton Ave, right on Taylor to regular route.
Pedestrians who use the Taylor Bridge and Newstead Bridge to access the Central West End MetroLink Station can use the pedestrian bridge over I-64 just east of Kingshighway.
