Bus Stop Evaluation Program: #1 Gold and #17 Oakville

Return to Blog

Throughout the region, many people are wearing their red and waiting to see what happens tonight at the Cardinals’ NLCS Game 5, so we understand if your mind is not on bus stops. But please review the following list of evaluated stops for the #1 Gold and #17 Oakville, and if you have a reason one of these stops should continue to be part of the route, please let us know.

Please note: none of the routes listed are being eliminated, but your feedback on specific stops is encouraged and greatly appreciated. Below is the new list of proposed MetroBus stops under consideration for removal for the following routes:

#1 Gold

#17 Oakville

These stops are being proposed for elimination as part of Metro’s Bus Stop Evaluation Program to make the system more efficient and faster.

    Hi Courtney –

As someone who uses the #1 (usually during inclement weather), the stop at Pershing and Belt (Westbound) gets traffic – but the bus drivers never seem to pull up to the bus stop sign. They typically stop a bus-length or more east of it. I dont know if that is because there is a stop sign on that corner or not. Also, this stop is in a logical place, as there is an eastbound shelter about 30 yards east (across from Atlas restaurant).

If the stop at Belt and Pershing (westbound) were removed, what is the closest westbound stop to that corner?

Also, it would be nice if the #1 stop at Pershing and De Baliviere (eastbound) was more closely timed with the arrival/departure of Metrolink. In many cases where I might have taken the bus, the headway between when the train arrived and the next bus arrived was/is long enough that I can walk quicker.

Thanks for all of your feedback RT. I’ll get back to you with a response!

    G’morning Courtney –

Just a quick follow-up from yesterday. Took a look at the bus stop on the #1 at Belt and Pershing last night. It looks like the bus stop sign has been moved down to where the bus actually stops (i.e. the bus length or so east where the bus stopped from the intersection). Hadn’t noticed, but that is likely because I have been traveling lately. I am curious as to why Metro would rather stop there than at the actual corner, since there is a stop sign right there on Pershing.

    1. Courtney says:

Is there a shelter there? Otherwise, I assume either ease of bus pulling over, or passenger ease, but I’ll have to check with our planning department regarding the specifics. Where you heading east or west on #1?

  3. RTBones says:

Westbound. This is the stop that is up for elimination at Pershing & Belt. The stop used to be right on the corner at the stop sign. Traditionally, though, buses have stopped about a bus length or two east from the corner. I noticed last night that the sign has actually been moved to where the drivers stop. Seems like that may have been done in the last month or two. (Again, I have been traveling lately, so it may have been moved before that and I just hadnt noticed.)

There is no shelter for Westbound. Eastbound has a shelter very close to the same corner, right across the street from Atlas.

For me personally, I’m hoping the Pershing and Belt (WB) stop does not get removed. Its in my neighborhood and is convenient – even if Google Transit doesnt always pick up the #1 when I am looking for times.

As far as the #17 goes, are they thinking of elimininating both stops in Mackenzie Point or just one? There’s one stop closer to the Dierbergs, and then a second one which is closer to the (now closed) Hometown Buffet. Personally, they can probably drop both on most runs since not many people use either stop from my experience.

    Hi Court:

If the #17 northbound stop at Mackenzie and Deerpath gets eliminated, what happens to the “Temporary Bus Stop” at Mackenzie and Foxcroft that’s been up for many months now? (It’s a laminated sign attached to the No Parking sign in front of 7272 Mackenzie, and I use it occasionally.) The nearest stops are either at Mackenzie and Holly Hills, which is way down the hill in the Village of Mackenzie, or at the entry drive to Lakewood Park Cemetery. (Google Maps does not show this accurately, but there is definitely a stop posted there.)

I don’t see the point in having a bus stop service a cemetery rather than a residential neighborhood! I would like to maintain a bus stop on the northbound side serving my subdivision, Mackenzie Hills. There is already a bus stop on the southbound side across from Foxcroft Drive. If you remove the bus stop on the northbound side at Deerpath Drive, please consider relocating the Lakewood Park Cemetery stop on the northbound side, to the corner of Foxcroft and Mackenzie on the northbound side, to line up with the s0uthbound stop at Foxcroft and Mackenzie.

Also, the first 3 southbound stops to be eliminated on the #17 are not correct. Kenrick Plaza, 7791 Watson and 8793 Watson are not serviced by the #17. Those may have been pasted over from the #21 where those were stops proposed for elimination. The #17 does not travel that far west on Watson. The only stops on Chippewa/Watson served by the #17 southbound are Near-Side at Chippewa and Creighton (in front of the Shop N Save), and at 7221 Watson in front of the Regions Bank (another stop I use frequently). There are two stops inside Mackenzie Point Shopping Center though, and I would recommend eliminating one of them unless there’s a big groundswell to keep it. I’d keep the one closer to the Dierbergs entrance, and drop the one down at the far end past the Petco near where Hometown Buffet used to be (sorry, not sure about addresses in there).

And finally, can you tell me why there is still a bus shelter on Chippewa at Weil on the westbound side? Yes, there is a bus stop on Chippewa at Weil eastbound served by both the #17 and the #21 before they turn onto the River des Peres bridge complex, a stop I use frequently. However, the shelter on the westbound side is not served by ANY bus route, not since August 2006. (The #30 does not stop there either, it’s final stop on Chippewa is at McCausland Avenue before it hits the River des Peres on-ramp.)

It’s very confusing to the causal customer to have a shelter where no bus stops. Perhaps it has something to do with advertising agreements with JCDecaux?

    Hi Court,

For the #1 Gold I would encourage Metro to keep the stops near the cross streets Belt and Clara. The area is pretty densely populated and has a fair number of elderly residents. Keeping the cross street stops would allow residents who live a few blocks north to continue easily access to a top instead of having to walk south then east or west another 1/2 block to a stop.

It looks like if all the stops listed were eliminated, then there would be cases where two stops in a row are cut. Is that correct? Eliminating two stops in a row should be avoided with preference given to the stops at the cross streets. The neighborhood is very walkable, and should stay that way with convenient transit access.

  7. Dawn says:

Please do not remove the proposed bus stops on the #17 and the #46, it is hard enough getting around and making connections without my car, getting to and from my multiple job locations, the store, etc., as it currently is posted, would appreciate more frequent runs, later runs and Sun, holiday service for these lines. Also, the #56 and #110!
    (I also ride the #21, #48, #11, Metro and #70 frequently).
Most of the riders that I encounter also echo these very sentiments!
Thank you so much for considering and implementing our thoughts and suggestions!

    Peaceful regards,
    Dawn Kimberling

#1 Gold update: I just heard from our Planning department, and the #01 Gold stops being eliminated are eastbound at 5540 Pershing and 5360 Pershing. Westbound is 5557 Pershing and 5367 Pershing. The stops at Clara & Belt in both directions are being kept.

  9. ASHLEY GILL says:

Does anyone know when the #17 bus will start running again?

    1. Jerry says:

Our planning team continues to evaluate ridership and workforce resources during the pandemic to determine what routes can be restored at the next service change, which will take place early this year. We will keep you updated as soon as more information is available.
