Flashback Friday
Return to BlogFlashback Friday!
This is a view of The Downtowner hotel after its opening in 1964 on the northeast corner of Tucker (then 12th St.) and Washington. The hotel currently stands remodeled as an apartment building.
Have a great weekend!
Northeast corner of Washington and Tucker early 1960s
This location was to be the passenger terminal of the Illinois Terminal Railroad. The electric interurban linked St. Louis with Springfield, Peoria, Decatur, Champaign and many other towns in between. The passenger terminal was to be built in conjunction with the freight warehouse next door, but the depression started in 1930 and only the freight warehouse was built, which still stands in the next block north on Tucker. The freight warehouse was then used for freight and passenger service. Look above the front door for the interurban car front in the stone.
