Flashback Friday!

Today’s photo shows two men waiting for a streetcar on Locust Street looking west to Thirteenth Street. The central St. Louis Public Library can be seen in the background. The year is estimated to be between 1905 and 1915.

Have a great weekend!

  1. Matt M. says:

The date has to be at least 1910, when the Central Library was substantially under construction. More than likely this photo was taken after the library completed.

      Correct!

  2. Ryan says:

wait, so why doesn’t St. Louis have streetcars like it used to?????? Seems like maybe we should make it easier for people to get around, not harder.

  3. Steve S says:

Ryan: The people of the 1950s were more focused on their newfound automobile freedom and the streetcars were just in the way. With help from the politicians in local government and the cost to maintain the track infrastructure, by a private corporation, the push to get rid of the streetcars was just too much and they went away. After WW TWO Europe rebuilt their streetcar systems and USA just abandoned them infavor of buses.
