Flashback Friday: Bus Stops on Highway 40 to Pick Up Passenger

Return to Blog

Hope everyone had a Happy Valentine’s Day yesterday! I wrote you all a poem:

Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
It’s Flashback Friday time,
I’m ready, are you?

I know, I know, you’re thinking “Don’t quite your day job!”, right?

Before we get to this week’s Flashback Friday picture, I want you to picture Interstate 64/Highway 40. Would you be willing to wait along the side of the highway for a bus nowadays?

Well, in this picture from 1959 we see a woman doing exactly that!

HWY 40 Big

Museum of Transportation

The Museum of Transportation photo shows an eastbound Ladue express bus stopping to pick up a passenger, according to Andrew D. Young. The passenger is being picked up in Richmond heights between Big Bend and the Bellevue Exit in August of 1959.

Fun Fact: In 1959, actor Steve McQueen starred in The Great St. Louis Bank Robbery film.
