Rider Alert: Rail Grinding Maintenance on IL MetroLink Wednesday – Friday

Return to Blog

MetroLink maintenance work continues to focus on rail grinding in Illinois Wednesday night through Friday night.  This process extends the life of the rail and provides a smoother passenger ride.  It’s the Zamboni of light rail tracks! As the special equipment used for the rail grinding slowly moves down the tracks, it often creates sparks.  As a precaution, a fire suppression crew follows directly behind the grinder to immediately douse any flames.

Below is the schedule for Wednesday, February 29, through Friday, March 2:

Wednesday through Friday

Beginning at 8 p.m., rail grinding crews will work on the tracks between the College MetroLink Station and the Shiloh-Scott MetroLink Station.  To accommodate the crews, MetroLink will operate on a single track at the College MetroLink Station until the end of service each night.  Red Line customers may experience delays of between 5 to 10 minutes.  Blue Line service will not be affected by the work.
