A First Look at Metro’s Upgraded Fare Technology

Return to Blog

Metro is taking another major step forward in modernizing the transit experience.

Later this year, new fare validators will be introduced across the MetroLink system as part of the Secure Platform Plan (SPP). These upgraded validators represent one of the final components of the plan and mark continued progress toward a safer, more efficient rider experience.

While the new validators are coming soon to MetroLink, this upgraded fare technology is already active across our MetroBus fleet. Bus riders are currently using the same validation equipment. Expanding this technology to MetroLink ensures a more seamless experience across the entire Metro system.

What’s Changing?

The new fare validators are designed with riders in mind. The enhanced technology will:

    • Provide smoother, more streamlined station entry
    • Offer new reloadable fare cards and mobile fare management tools
    • Improve fare recognition and reliability
    • Support a safe and more secure platform

These enhancements build on our Secure Platform Plan, with upgrades already implemented across the system.

A Sneak Peek at What’s Ahead

While the new validators are not yet live, installation and testing are underway. Riders may begin to see the upgraded equipment at stations as we prepare for full activation later this year.

We’re excited about what this next phase means for our riders and our region.

Watch the video below to see the new fare validators in action and stay tuned for more updates as we move closer to launch.
