Metro Transit is getting ready to upgrade its current fleet of light rail vehicles with the next generation of MetroLink. In partnership with Siemens, 55 brand-new, state-of-the-art light rail vehicles (LRVs) are in design phase now in California to replace the current MetroLink fleet, with the first deliveries of the new LRVs arriving in 2027. These cutting-edge LRVs will bring major upgrades in technology, safety, comfort and rider experience, setting a new standard for transit in our region.

Project Details:

  • Metro Transit was awarded a $196.2 million grant from the Federal Transit Administration in 2023 for the replacement of aging MetroLink LRVs. Metro Transit in St. Louis was the only recipient of this grant award in the United States.
  • The new LRVs will allow for the replacement of current MetroLink light rail vehicles that have been in operation since the 1990s, with some LRVs that have been in service since MetroLink first opened in 1993.
  • The project is currently in the design review phase. The new LRVs will be built at Siemens facilities in Sacramento, California.
