MetroLink rail grinding maintenance work will continue in Illinois this weekend. The rail grinding process extends the life of the rail and provides a smoother passenger ride. As the special equipment used for the rail grinding slowly moves down the tracks through different Metro east communities, it is important that residents are reminded that the rail grinder creates sparks. As a precaution, a fire suppression crew follows directly behind the grinder to immediately douse any flames. The grinding equipment Metro is using is designed for use in urban environments. It uses industry leading technology to reduce noise levels and has the most advanced dust control system available. Area residents should not be concerned when they see sparks. In addition to the fire suppression unit, Metro is in contact with emergency responders in the affected communities.
Below is the schedule for Saturday and Sunday, March 3 and March 4:
Saturday
Beginning at 8 p.m., rail grinding crews will work on the tracks between the College MetroLink Station and the Shiloh-Scott MetroLink Station. To accommodate the crews, MetroLink will operate on a single track at the College MetroLink Station until the end of service each night. Red Line customers may experience delays of between 5 to 10 minutes. Blue Line service will not be affected by the work.
